Your electric bill might be on the way up. Indiana Michigan Power is asking the state for a 20-percent rate hike. That's on top of the increases we've been seeing over the last few months in the price of coal, which have been passed on to us. Anthony Swinger of the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor says over 90-percent of our electricity comes from coal, and his office is reviewing I-and-M's request. Swinger says it would be I-and-M's first base rate increase since 1993. The OUCC tonight will hold a public hearing in Fort Wayne on Indiana Michigan Power's proposed rate hike. Swinger says we're still at least a few months away from a final decision.
A young fallen hero from Elkhart County will be given a final farewell today. Funeral services are scheduled this afternoon for 24-year-old Army Staff Sergeant Travis Hunsberger of Wakarusa, who died from a landmine in Afghanistan on June 27th. Hunsberger was on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan. Hundreds of people paid their respects at Monday's visitation at Nappanee Missionary Church. Another visitation is scheduled this afternoon from one to three before the three o'clock funeral at the church. Hunsberger, a 2002 graduate of NorthWood High School, will be buried at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Most political watchdogs think Democratic candidate for Indiana governor Jill Long-Thompson made a smart move by picking downstate Indiana House member Dennie Oxley as her running mate. Micah Clark of the American Family Association tells Solid Gospel 1270 the pick gives Long-Thompson geographic balance, since she's from Northern Indiana and Oxley is from the southern part. She's considered a real liberal who supports abortion and gay rights, while Oxley was the only Democrat on the House Rules Committee to support the proposed Marriage Protection Amendment, but Clark says Oxley may be changing his colors. Clark says Oxley told some gay rights Democrats at the party's state convention he would support their agenda. Governor Mitch Daniels has received the endorsement from the Indiana Right to Life. Group Chairman Mike Fichter calls Long-Thompson "the most radical abortion proponent to ever seek the office of governor in Indiana.
Conservative Christian radio is under attack in Washington. Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wants to revive the Fairness Doctrine, which was abolished 21 years ago by the Reagan administration. Third District, Indiana Congressman Mark Souder says the Fairness Doctrine would require Christian radio broadcasters to make time to hear both sides of controversial issues, like homosexuality and abortion, even though it may go against the teachings of the Bible. Some pro-family groups feel it could knock some conservative talk shows, like Focus on the Family, off the air. Souder is among the some 200 Republican congressmen who've signed a petition by Indiana Republican Mike Pence, calling for Pelosi to allow an up-or-down House vote on the "Broadcaster Freedom Act." No Democrat has signed that petition, including Second District, Indiana Congressman Joe Donnelly, who last year voted for a one-year delay on the Fairness Doctrine.
Toll Booth workers on the Indiana Toll Road may be closer to walking off the job and going on strike. Contract talks are at a standstill, and both the private operator of the Toll Road and the Teamsters union are voicing disappointment over the negotiations. Bob Dobbs is a business agent for the Teamsters in South Bend and says neither side has budged on the percent of temporary workers the Toll Road would use to replace full- and part-time employees in the toll booths, now that electronic tolling is available. Dobbs says the union wants no more than ten-percent temporary workers, while Toll Road officials want 30-percent. The company is offering pay raises, but not the 50-percent increase and free insurance the Teamsters wants.
The son of North Central Indiana State Representative Rich McClain is being questioned in connection with a shooting in Cass County (IN). The shooting happened early Sunday morning, west of Logansport, at the home of Jeff McClain. Jeff McClain is described as a person of interest. Cass County Prosecutor Kevin Enyeart has filed a petition for a special prosecutor in the case because of his involvement in Cass County's Republican Party. That special prosecutor is Ron Byal from Howard County. State Rep Rich McClain is also a Republican and represents the 24th District. No arrests have been made in the shooting.
Making too much noise in Elkhart will cost you. The City Council Monday night adopted some changes to the city's noise ordinance. If you're caught playing your music way too loud or making too much noise, you'll be fined 250-dollars for the first offense, with fines increasing for each ticket you get, up to 25-hundred dollars. The Elkhart Police Department will have one officer assigned to enforce the noise law. Once Mayor Dick Moore signs the ordinance, it will go into effect.
Three people have died in a horrible car crash along I-65 near Frankfort. State Police say a small car heading south on 65 crossed the median during a rain storm shortly before ten o'clock Monday morning. A semi traveling north hit the vehicle, killing everybody inside the car. The truck driver was not hurt.
Indiana has one of the worst records in the United States for processing disability claims. "The Indianapolis Star" reports Hoosiers unable to work because of medical or psychiatric ills are forced to wait far longer than most Americans for disability payments.
More and more of us are dusting off our spades to fight high food prices by planting vegetable gardens. Vegetable plant sales in Indiana have surged. Many customers say they're planting their first vegetable gardens to save money.
Researchers say Lake Michigan is suffering from an influx of Quagga mussels, which more than tripled in number in the Great Lake from 2005 to 2007. The invasion of Quagga mussels have caused fish to be thinner and clogged intake pipes at power plants.

Notre Dame has extended men's basketball coach Mike Brey's contract another two years. The 49-year-old Brey is now under contract in South Bend through the 2014-15 season. He's entering his ninth season with the Fighting Irish. Brey has led Notre Dame to five 20-win seasons and has been the Big East Coach of the Year the past two seasons. The Irish were 25-and-8 last year.
Indiana University quarterback Kellen Lewis is back with the IU football team. The junior was suspended indefinitely in March for unspecified reasons and missed all of spring practice. Head coach Bill Lynch says Lewis met all of the benchmarks that were set for his return, and he's happy to welcome the Jacksonville, Florida native back to the fold. Lewis led the Hoosiers to their first bowl game in 14 years last season and was named second team all-Big Ten.
The Milwaukee Brewers strengthened their pitching staff as they fight with the Chicago Cubs for first place in the National League Central. The Brewers are getting reigning American League Cy Young Award winner C.C. Sabathia from the Cleveland Indians for three minor league prospects and a player to be named later. Sabathia, whose contract expires at the end of the season, started slowly but has recovered to post a 6-and-8 record with a three-point-eight-three earned run average. The Brewers are in third place, four games behind the Cubs.
The Chicago Cubs have returned home from their longest road trip of the season, still in first place with a three-and-a-half game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cubs start a three-game series at Wrigley Field tonight with the Cincinnati Reds. Ryan Dempster, who's undefeated at home this season and headed to next week's All-Star game, will be the starting pitcher for the North Siders tonight.
The Chicago White Sox extended their lead in the American League Central to a game-and-a-half over the Minnesota Twins and didn't even play Monday night. The Twins lost a pitchers' duel to the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, 1-0, to break their five-game winning streak.
Former Indiana University guard Earl Calloway led a balanced attack as the Indiana Pacers beat Oklahoma City, 95-78, in the opener of the Orlando Summer Pro League. Calloway led five Pacers in double figures with 16 points. Guard Andre Emmett, who played for Bob Knight at Texas Tech, had 15 points. The Pacers face the Chicago Bulls today.
